South Wales Ball, Paget Rooms, 27 April 2024

Updated: Sep 25, 2024

Excited reunions, warm hugs, animated conversations – the sparkling drinks reception was clearly going well. Every last drop of Prosecco had been consumed before the dancers entered the main hall ready to start the evening’s dancing. But it wasn’t the alcohol that created the fun. From the first lively bars of “Good Hearted Glasgow” it was obvious that the evening was going to go with a swing.

Nicol McLaren (along with Jim and Robert from the Glencraig Band) did us proud. The quality of the music, the interesting programme, the readiness of everyone to get up and dance, experienced dancers’ helpfulness towards newer dancers, a willingness to mix, and the general air of friendliness all contributed to the vibrant atmosphere. We had dancers from across South Wales, from Abergavenny in the east to Milford Haven in the west, and also from outside Wales: Bristol and Cheltenham, and as far afield as Hampshire and London.

With forty-two dancers we were able to fill the Paget Rooms comfortably, and had the advantage of sufficient space to do justice to the music, and on occasion to positively fly across the floor.

It was a token of the enthusiasm of all present that we not only completed the programme of sixteen dances, but also added the two extras and a few encores, and still finished just shy of 11:00 pm! With whoops, twirls and creative variations, as well as cracking music for “The Deil amang the Tailors” and “Mairi’s Wedding”, we certainly went out with a bang.

Thanks to all who supported us. A memorable evening.
