This summer the RSCDS have brought out the first volume of a collection of dances by the reputed devisor and longstanding dancer and teacher Derek Haynes, who died very suddenly in 2005. The dances had previously appeared in six separate booklets which were compiled by Derek himself, with the sixth being published posthumously by his widow Maureen, based on further dances stored on Derek’s computer. These booklets were sold to raise money for cancer charities, and amazingly brought in over £6,000. The first three are now collated into volume 1 of this fresh publication.

The dances range from the very familiar (such as MacDonald of the Isles and The Black Mountain Reel) through moderately well-known favourites like Ray Milbourne & Gaelforce Wind to others (e.g. Blervie Castle & The Corner House Jig) that are rarely if ever seen on dance programmes – well, not in our area, anyway. The book also encompasses relatively straightforward dances like Yan Tan Tethera as well as greater challenges such as My Heather Hills. 

 

Because of the variety of their appeal, plus the fact that Derek Haynes dances flow with ease from one formation to another, but also include interesting little tweaks, everyone’s tastes should be catered for.

At the workshop we will dance to recorded music. There are twenty-seven dances in the new book. Eighteen of those are contained in an accompanying double CD recorded by Liam Stewart and his Band. Both the book and the CD are available for sale from the RSCDS. With member discount the book costs £13.50 and the CD £18. (Prices for non-members are £15 and £20 respectively.) ​

Although Derek’s own death was caused by a heart attack, given his and Maureen’s commitment to raising money for cancer charities, it would seem appropriate for us to have a special collection at the workshop in aid of one of those charities. Maybe Maggie’s Swansea, based at Singleton Hospital, would be a fitting choice?
